Many small mammal species are poorly studied. Their distribution and ecology are often unknown. This is mostly due to their size and their cryptic behaviour.
Nevertheless, small mammals are extremely important as they provide many ecosystem services and are also increasingly used in ecological and ecotoxicological studies, as indicators for the risk assessment of human activities.
