Sonoma Valley Regional Park Bioblitz

Join Sonoma County Parks and the California Academy of Sciences for one of a series of Sonoma County grassroots bioblitzes! Sonoma Valley is a 202-acre park that features several miles of trails and offers the tranquility of a much larger preserve due the quality of habitat and surrounding open space.The park's main path is a paved, 1.2-mile trail that begins near a wetland and meadow, winds through magnificent oak woodlands and follows a seasonal creek. Several unpaved trails on the hillsides and ridge-tops offer looped hiking options. In 2015, the park added 29 acres to its northern boundary. The addition features a trail with sweeping views of the Sonoma Valley and the Mayacamas Ridge. Sonoma Valley Regional Park is an important piece of the Sonoma Valley Wildlife Corridor, a collection of protected lands where animals can safely cross the valley floor.

A bioblitz is an intensive one-day study of biodiversity in a specific location. We’ll look for birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, butterflies, insects, spiders, trees, flowers, mushrooms, anything!

People of all ages and skill levels are welcome! You bring your curiosity, a smart phone with the iNaturalist app downloaded (or digital camera), and tons of enthusiasm. We’ll rally some experts and folks who know the area. Together we’ll make some science!

The fun happens on Saturday, November 5. We'll explore the park and document everything we can find for a few hours, then we'll all come back together to upload our observations, see what everyone else found, and get help with IDs.
