SoundCloud is no longer needed!

Good news! You can now upload audio files from your device onto the iNaturalist observation. It's still a little bit of a process but you no longer need to upload to SoundCloud, which is a big bonus.

To upload a recording to your observation, you first need to load the iNaturalist website on your phone's web browser. Once loaded you need to go into the browser menu and select "request desktop site". Then navigate to your observation and select "edit" up the top right of the screen. On the edit screen, on the far right under the "Add Media" column, select the "Add Sounds" tab. Ensure the Source is set to "Your Computer", and then select "Browse". Navigate to where your audio file is on your phone and add it. Then hit "Save Observation" at the bottom of the screen.

As easy as that! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions and we can troubleshoot.

I've tried uploading an mp3 to an observation but keep getting this message:

"I ate iNaturalist.org, that's why it's not working.
(Ack! Something went wrong. We'll look into it soon or you can email us at help at inaturalist.org)".

It's a standard 44.1khz 320kbps mp3 and the file size is 3707KB. Not sure what's going wrong. I've got quite a few other cicada calls I'd like to upload.

I've just tried again with a different recording and it works. I'll see how I go with the next few recordings.

It might have been an inaturalist issue. There have been known to be the odd bug (pun intended) or two with some of the uploading. Were you uploading from your phone or PC? I haven't had any issues previously, though I usually upload wav files. Good to hear it is working though!

I think I've found a workaround solution.

Uploads are fine if the original WAV file from which the mp3 was sourced is a 44/16khz file. However if the WAV file was 48bit then the mp3 doesn't upload, even if the mp3 is converted to 44/16 it still doesn't upload. Only when I convert the original wav to 44/16, then create an mp3 from that does it upload. Strange issue and not sure what is going on there, but at least I have a workaround now!
