Explore the Ephemeral Marsh of the C&O Canal - Saturday, August 18th 10:00 - 11:30 am

The temporary closing of the C&O Canal has created conditions for an abundant wetland in the heart of Georgetown! Join City Wildlife and Biophilic DC for an exploration of this “pop-up” marsh that has attracted many grasses and other plants, birds, bugs, and aquatic life. We’ll enjoy and document this rich, spontaneous wetland before the National Park Service restoration turns it once again into a flowing canal<\a>.

iNaturalist users and other citizen scientists welcome! Help from people who know plants, odonates, fishes, and herps would be particularly appreciated. Meet on Saturday, August 18th at 10:00 am at 33rd Street on the Canal.

This event is free and all are welcome, but space is limited, so please register to attend by sending an email to City Wildlife (info@citywildlife.org).

Tagging past field trip participants and a few additional DC area naturalists. @achang @ashley_bradford @botanygirl @briangratwicke @calopteryx @capitalnaturalist @carrieseltzer @dossification @ecologyelise @etotin @geem @gwh @hughmcguinness @jhammock @jmgconsult @judygva @kestrelsparverius @krosenthal @laura_sebastianelli @lynnparsons @mark376 @maryeford @mdnaturalist @mellis @mmn_noriko @peggyo @rhondaridley @rumeltr @shinnickj @vincent12

Kayak to the Arboretum - May 10 and May 12 from 9:30a to 1:30p

Meet at Bladensburg Waterfront Park at 9:30a to pick up kayaks and paddle down to the National Arboretum (part of the USDA's park and research gardens). If you are game, we'll take trash bags with us to collect any floating debris. Enjoy conversation and company as we hike the Asian plant collection. Learn about The Peace Tree (from 1625) which survived 1945 Hiroshima, Japan. Hike as much or as little of the Arboretum as you have time while we are on shore (an Arboretum guide may join us). Rather than hike, if you prefer, bring a book and relax on the shore's edge. 1.5 - 2 hours of time in the kayaks. Total experience is 4 hours. Kayak rental and gear is $21-26 based on residency. Pack a lunch or bring something to share. @treegrow @carrieseltzer @serenella @genevievedem @jmgconsult @jwidness @mmn_noriko

iNaturalist Bioblitz Meet Up at Meadowside Nature Center this summer - June 16th from 10-1pm

@anolis23 has invited us to participate in a Bioblitz this summer at Meadowside Nature Center in Rockville, MD. I know this is a long time off, but Alberto needs to select a date to put it on the Nature Center calendar. So it would be great if we could get a preliminary show of hands for preferred dates among this group. The following dates are on the table:

  • June 9th - PM
  • June 16th - Any time
  • July 7th - Any time

The nature center may be able to provide a shuttle from the Glenmont metro station, so this will be great for those of us without cars. Please let us know if you would like to participate and if any of these dates won't work for you.

For this first round, I'm tagging past field trip participants and a few people that have a lot of observations near Meadowside Nature Center. Once the event draws closer, we'll cast a wider net. If I have tagged you but are not interested in following the discussion, let me know, and I'll take you off the tag list.
