Bioblitz May 16-21 2016

Mark those calendars, for a bioblitz is on its way. A bioblitz is a concentrated effort of citizen scientists to document as many species as possible during the time frame. So get those flower bed weeds, ticks, and garden birds documented!

Domesticated or captive animals (pets and zoo) and garden plants put down by human hand don't count though, as they don't help us understand our native ecosystem.

Be sure to attend the science festival as below:

May 20 (7pm-10pm) SMM Science Festival
May 21 (10am-4pm) SMM Science Festival
The Science Festival is taking place at Paramount Ranch over the period of 2 days. The first day is an evening-only affair, with guided hikes and talks on evening life.

And don't forget to join the project here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/2016-national-parks-bioblitz-santa-monica-mountains

Have fun!

March 15, 2016

Spring is in force!

With March on its way now is the time to start keeping an eye out for some of the Santa Monica's best wildflowers. The purple, white, yellow, blue, and red blooms of several of our species are making their presence across the range. Many birds are singing for mates, or even constructing nests, and some of the earlier butterflies and moths are starting to emerge.

Triunfo Creek Park, Circle X Ranch (Mishe Mokwa Trail), Malibu Creek State Park, and several coastal canyons (La Jolla, Ray Miller, etc.) are in full show. Keep an eye out at other spots too, there'll be something to see no matter where you go.

Don't forget to check the flowers closer up, there might be a ladybug hiding inside too...
