Various authorities recognize different subspecies for Alces alces for different reasons, but for the sake of simplicity and to recognize the preferences of the iNaturalist community to acknowledge subspecific taxa for the moose in North America, this taxon change shifts those recognized in the current IUCN Red List Assessment (Hundertmark, 2016).

Most recent phylogenetic work on Alces alces is aimed at determining if it represents one or two species, but there has been work done that support the traditional subspecific designations at least in North America (Hundertmark et al. 2003).

Per personal correspondence with Dr. Patricia Rosel, who has reached out to other members of the Taxonomic Committee of Marine Mammals, it is premature to definitively integrate P. v. stejnegeri as a taxon separate from P. v. richardii.

Their words are as follows:

"The evidence for the validity of [P. v. stejnegeri] as separate from P.v. richardsi is mixed. There are some morphological differences, but they are of the qualitative nature. Genetic results have been mixed on whether the two Pacific populations form discrete monophyletic groups. More robust genetic studies or morphologic studies using morphometric methods are necessary before splitting out stegnegeri."

Though a true sister taxon of the striped hyena, most contemporary authorities have reestablished the brown hyena as the only taxon under Parahyaena. In addition to the Mammal Diversity Database, it is treated as Parahyaena brunnea in Hunter (2018), Yarnell et al. (2016), and Wiesel (2015).
