Heads up: Some or all of the identifications affected by this split may have been replaced with identifications of Cercopithecus. This happens when we can't automatically assign an identification to one of the output taxa. Review identifications of Cercopithecus pogonias 566548

Taxonomic Split 55662 (Committed on 2019-04-16)

IUCN already accepts the split between C. pogonias and C. wolfi -- see (for example) the taxonomic notes of https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/40646/92572335
Since they've failed to upload the new assessments, I've split the map myself. C. pogonias sensu lato is now C. pogonias sensu stricto plus C. wolfi (south of the Congo River). These former C. pogonias subspecies are also reassigned:
C. p. wolfi to C. w. wolfi
C. p. elegans to C. w. elegans
(And I've added C. w. pyrogaster for completeness)

C. p. pogonias, C. p. grayi, and C. p. nigripes remain as subspecies of C. pogonias.

Only one subspecies has any observations, so I've drafted two taxon changes:
C. p. wolfi to C. w. wolfi https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/55657
C. pogonias split into C. pogonias plus C. wolfi https://www.inaturalist.org/taxon_changes/55662

C. pogonias sensu stricto and C. wolfi now both match the intended IUCN taxonomy and also the MDD taxonomy.

@loarie I think what's left is to commit the subspecies swap (55657), commit the split (55662), make the new subspecies active and the old ones inactive (I think I can do that?), and update the frameworks for C. pogonias stricto and C. wolfi as matches.

looks good to me - I'm left one more comment here to see if jakob has anything to say https://www.inaturalist.org/posts/21191-mammal-taxon-curators#activity_comment_2763914

ugh ssp
does Wolf's Monkey Cercopithecus pogonias ssp. wolfi go to Cercopithecus wolfi and the remainder stay with Cercopithecus pogonias?
Cercopithecus pogonias ssp. elegans
Cercopithecus pogonias ssp. grayi
Cercopithecus pogonias ssp. nigripes
Cercopithecus pogonias ssp. pogonias

No, I tried to list them up in the description, but I guess I wasn't very clear, sorry.

C. p. wolfi goes to C. wolfi wolfi
C. p. elegans goes to C. wolfi elegans

pogonias, nigripes, and grayi stay with C. pogonias

C. p. wolfi is the only one with obs, so I figured the rest didn't need any swaps. Just make the old ssp inactive and the new ones active.

Posted by jwidness about 5 years ago

@loarie I did all the subspecies juggling, I think the only thing left is to commit this swap.

Posted by jwidness about 5 years ago

Ok looks good, but for 'C. p. elegans goes to C. wolfi elegans' you really should swap (I made one) because there's other stuff (common names, conservation statuses etc) we don't want to loose
Also, rather than inactivating a taxon and making a new active taxon with a different parent, better to move the taxon for the same reason (I did that and deleted the active taxa you made)
But looks good I committed the swap

Posted by loarie about 5 years ago

That makes more sense -- moving is done via Edit Taxon, then changing the parent ID?

Posted by jwidness about 5 years ago

correct - just change the parent ID
