@loarie I've been noticing that there are quite a few invalid taxa under Elasmobranchii, despite being a complete taxa linked to FishBase framework. Any idea on what is happening?

Hi Bobby - sorry for the delay - was traveling. To make sense of this, I'd want to start by making taxon framework relationships so we can try to understand which taxa aren't accounted for (ie remain as 'relationship unknown') so we can focus on those, I can give it a shot if you like

OK - I can wire all this up with taxon framework relationships. But first, @clinton ok to make these taxon changes to bring things in line with Fishbase?

Anacanthobatis americana -> Schroederobatis americana
Anacanthobatis folirostris -> Springeria folirostris
Anacanthobatis longirostris -> Springeria longirostris
Dipturus oculus -> Dentiraja oculata
Dipturus whitleyi -> Spiniraja whitleyi
Zameus ichiharai -> Scymnodon ichiharai
Narcine vermiculatus -> Narcine vermiculata
Narcine nelsoni -> Narcinops nelsoni
Narcine lasti -> Narcinops lasti
Narcine ornata -> Narcinops ornata
Narcine tasmaniensis -> Narcinops tasmaniensis
Narcine westraliensis -> Narcinops westraliensis
Raja chinensis -> Dipturus chinensis
Raja cortezensis -> Beringraja cortezensis
Raja stellulata -> Beringraja stellulata
Raja rhina -> Beringraja rhina
Raja inornata -> Beringraja inornata

and also
Schroederobatis & Springeria split off from Anacanthobatis
Narcinops split off from Narcine
Spiniraja split off from Dipturus
Aetobatidae added as a family for Aetobatus
Gurgesiellidaes split off from Rajidae

Rajidae family to Gurgesiellidae

Posted by loarie about 5 years ago

All of these changes appear correct to me with the exception of the last two, i.e. Gurgesiellidaes split off from Rajidae and Rajidae family to Gurgesiellidae. Last et al. (2016) recognise Rajidae, Arhynchobatidae, Gurgesiellidae (for Curiraja, Fenestraja, Gurgesiella) and Anacanthobatidae (for Anacanthobatis, Indobatis, Schroederobatus, Sinobatis, Springeria) within Rajiformes. So Gurgesiellidae split off from Rajidae is correct (nothwithstanding the spelling mistake) but Rajidae should be retained (i.e. not Rajidae family to Gurgesiellidae).

Some other changes that need to be made are:
Himantura pacifica -> Styracura pacifica
Himantura schmardae -> Styracura schmardae
Styracura spp moved from Dasyatidae to Potamotrygonidae

Cheers,
Clinton

ugh sorry that was a typo,
Gurgesiellidaes split off from Rajidae
Rajidae family to Gurgesiellidae
should have been
Gurgesiellidae split off from Rajidae

I'll make these changes and the
Himantura pacifica -> Styracura pacifica
Himantura schmardae -> Styracura schmardae
Styracura spp moved from Dasyatidae to Potamotrygonidae
changes you mention

Ok Elasmobranchii is now fully mapped (ie no 'relationship unknowns') and 15 deviations https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/47273/taxonomy_details
thanks for your help bobby and clinton
