I am a professor of biology at Pierce College in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, the traditional and unceded territory of the Tongva, Tataviam, and Chumash peoples. It is a naturalist's dream to live and work in the California Floristic Province, a global biodiversity hotspot.

My professional taxonomic focus is mostly meso- and bathypelagic fishes, but in recent years I've branched out into a variety of terrestrial taxa.

The majority of my observations are made while trail running, so my photos are often made with a cell phone and may not be optimal.

I usually don't add subspecies IDs to observations here, as I have philosophical objections to the rank of subspecies.
