I am a software architect and data scientist working on the Great Barrier Reef. I started using iNaturalist when I began working on on the development of a system that uses machine learning to perform automated marine benthic image analysis. I wanted to appreciate what it takes to identify species (Is one picture enough? How much detail is needed?, etc.) and to study the process of learning to recognise species given that the guide books typically only have a few pictures.

I started focusing on plants because they are so accessible. They don’t fly or run away and they are superficially a bit like coral. I am also learning coral taxonomy, but my access to coral reefs is somewhat limited and plants are much easier to identify.
