Made my first project and place!

Decided it was time to finally make it easier for myself to track what I've observed in the park near me. Now I have a new place added.

Best way to make a KML file is to

  • Download Google Earth
  • make a new polygon
  • export polygon as KML

If you want to see the progress, here is the new project!

2024, this year's Lepidoptera on the island of Nevis

I did not do great on butterflies during this year's visit, but I did pretty well on moths.

But some of the identifications may be wrong:

Useful links to journal cheat sheets and ID posts.

This will hopefully be an easy-to-reference list of helpful posts about identifying various organisms that can sometimes be hard to separate species, as applicable mainly to Texas. Please note, I did not create these. Credit is given to the OP.

Need a reason to remove garlic mustard ...?

... besides that it puts down poison into the soil that prevents native seeds from germinating?

Here's one involving butterflies.

The spread of garlic mustard is causing the West Virginia White butterfly (Pieris virginiensis) to decline in number.

This butterfly with translucent white wings depends crucially on native two-leaved toothwort (Cardamine diphylla) as its host plant. (

Fungi on the island of Nevis, 2024

My friend Misha last year asked me to record as many fungi as I could on Nevis. I did not do so well back then, but I did better during this year's visit, perhaps because the island was getting more rain than usual at this time of year.

Thank you for Appreciating Native Plants

Thank you all for participating in our (Native Plant Society: PDX chapter) Annual Native Plant Appreciation Month (NPAM) BioBlitz, whether you chose to join the project or just found your observations being snapped up into our Project. If they were added, it means that they were identified by enough others to be considered Research Grade. Of course there is still plenty of room for misidentifications, but we keep this requirement in the hopes that our observations will be a valid demon...

Observation field: Rewilding

I created new observation field to further describe the nature of organisms occurring at built environment in particular observation. It currently accepts following values:

  • deterioration (when structure has broken to allow eg. animal in or plant growing)
  • spontaneous (unintended feature of built structure, eg. cavity in the wall for animal to enter)
  • planned (bird nest box, ground left undermanaged on purpose... )
  • natural (as close as it gets: organis...

Tiarella in New England

A revised taxonomy of Tiarella in eastern North America was proposed in July 2021. (Nesom 2021) The new taxonomy was subsequently accepted by Plants of the World Online (POWO), Flora of the southeastern United States (FSUS), VASCAN, and others. iNaturalist (which follows POWO) split Tiarella cordifolia into five species in November 2022.

City Nature Challenge Report for 2024

Hey there folks,

We're just over a week out of the identification period closing, which meant the end of the City Nature Challenge 2024. We did well here in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, with 9,873 observations of 2083 species. Most exciting is that we had 220 people who made observations during the CNC, the new high for participation in the seven years our region has been a part of the global bioblitz.

I put together a report that is available here:

Cacti in Manitoba - time for a treasure hunt

yes there are cacti found in Manitoba - and more could be known about them. Let's start with what was known in Scoggans 1957 Flora of Manitoba...

Pincushion cacti were represented by a single species: Mamillaria vivipara (Nutt.) Haw. which we currently know in iNat as Escobaria vivipara (Spinystar). All the reports listed were from sandhills. Localities were Lauder, Grande Clariere, ...

Top tip #3: Avoid hitting the wall

If you are doing multiple dives, over a number of days for the census, or any project, maybe frustration is setting in for you too with less new finds recorded?
Do not despair: nature is dynamic above and below water.
Conditions change with each tide and the critter haven from last week, or the previous day, may no no longer "the spot".
Take time to recharge and refocus: see what else is happening underwater with regard to fish life, shrimp, crabs and seastars and then who ...

Western Honey Bees, etc.

I have been thinking that I need to keep a better journal about my nature wanderings, both physical and mental.

I have come up to Coyote Pond almost everyday for a week now. I saw a rat scurry under a ledge about a month ago when walking on the middle trail, the one below the ridge top and I set a trail camera on it. The first time was just overnight and I got a photo of a upper portion of a rodent

2024 Field Season

Hello & happy spring! Karner season is approaching fast and I’m here to give you an update:

Lupine is just starting to flower in sunny/southern spots. As a reminder, the best time to scout your sites is when the lupine is in bloom. This way you know exactly where to go for your surveys later in the summer. I’d give the lupine another week or two to get bloomin before you head out to scout.

As a reminder, all the training materials can be found on the Volunteer Website...

Christmas berry (Photinia villosa syn. Pourthiaea villosa)

As the spring season reaches its prime and many plants begin to re-emerge, one plant to watch out for is christmas berry (Photinia villosa). Native to temperate Asia, this species was introduced to the US as an ornamental plant that is valued for its year-round beauty. However, christmas berry poses a significant ecological threat by creating dense shade and thickets that prevent native seeds from germinating and growing.

Birds are attracted to its fruits and play a role...
