City Nature Challenge Polk: Winter Haven Scrub's Journal

April 27, 2024

City Nature Challenge Has Begun!

In just under 48 hours, we'll all be together at the Winter Haven Scrub Site for a bioblitz!
The city nature challenge officially started yesterday, so get outside and practice your naturalist skills before Monday! We're so excited for everyone to join us. If you haven't registered for the event, please do so here: https://WHScrubBioBlitz2024.eventbrite.com/?aff=inat

There are a number of important things to note before leaving home, though. Please see the list below:

  • Pollard Road is under construction and you cannot access the event through the North or West. You must come in from highway 60 - through the intermodal logistics center. (see area map, attached, and close up of dirt road). GPS Point: 27.942489, -81.708708 https://maps.app.goo.gl/EtLwkG1uFCAANyEDA
  • Please bring water and snacks with you
  • Wear sun-protection (hat, spf, long sleeves, etc) - it's a scrub site!
  • Wear sturdy footwear, the site has deep sand in parts that can be challenging to walk through.
  • There are no restrooms, so please go before arriving
  • For bioblitzing - have the inaturalist app downloaded, an account created, and be ready to go when you arrive!

I recommend bringing a clipboard or other item to use as a background for photos of plant materials that are hard to focus on or isolate.

See you Monday morning!
