Maine is Home to Two Species of Fox

Maine is home to two species of fox: the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus).

They are similar in size, but differ in appearance.

Red foxes have red/orange fur with a white chest, black legs, and bushy white-tipped tail. Melanistic forms of the red fox can be black, silver, or a combination of red/black/grey, but are less common than the typical red phase.

Gray foxes have silver/grey fur with a hint of red on their neck, ears, and lower legs, and a black stripe down their tail.
