Recent 2023 scholarly published article's evidences regarding four global plants names checklists (tertiary sources)

A brief post acknowledging this scholarly publication:
Recent 2023 scholarly published article's evidences regarding four global plants names checklists (tertiary sources).
(As only now i just came across it, being busy outdoors for 3+ months).

Schellenberger Costa, D., Boehnisch, G., Freiberg, M., Govaerts, R., Grenié, M., Hassler, M., Kattge, J., Muellner-Riehl, A.N., Rojas Andrés, B.M., Winter, M., Watson, M., Zizka, A. and Wirth, C. (2023)
The big four of plant taxonomy – a comparison of global checklists of vascular plant names.

Regarding the necessity of taxa' authors' names, an important quotation:

But the sheer scale of differences in accepted names linked to taxon names across all lists means that it is unlikely they will be checked in the short term, leaving users with no choice but to acknowledge the idiosyncrasies and potentially test for their effect on name resolution.
Such tests, however, should include botanical author names, but unfortunately, at a time where large global databases as TRY, GBIF, or GIFT make huge amounts of data available to ecologists, there is a tendency to omit author names for simplicity.
This is not only the fault of the users themselves – the majority (76%) of the taxon names submitted to the v.6 of TRY had no author names.
Problems arising through this are well known among taxonomists, but mostly ignored or unknown in other research communities.
Examples include wrong distribution models or animal names ending up in botanical databases.
While only 3–5% of taxon names in the different checklists are homonyms (Fig. 2h), their author names being necessary for correct assignment, we argue increased attention should be paid when submitting data involving taxonomic information to any database.
Especially for homonyms, which have a list dependence of > 0.5, inconsistencies in databases may have a substantial impact on inferences drawn.

Comments and identifications:

macropneuma suggested an ID – April 26th
Ptisana oreades – a member of Family Marattiaceae Potato Fern Family

@andymurdock would you check this ID please, when time permits! – April 27th .

@macropneuma It appears to a P. oreades that's had a bit of a rough life. It's small, pinnules are somewhat misshapen, but it still has the general look and leathery pinnules of P. oreades and there's no other good option for the region. – April 29th .

Thank you Andy Murdock, much appreciated.

This beaut' small plant grows up the lower slopes of a steep hill,
under the dense canopy shaded south aspect here,
in unusually fertile soil for this region
and 10+ m above a steep creek.
So probably much drier and a bit rougher life for it than usual growing on the bank of the creek with roots accessing water.

I have to read the global taxonomy articles of Ptisana more, sometime.

Best,
Jason.

RFK ed. 8: botanical matrix key features selections from this observed plant:

——
Our Comments :

Tony R. @bean_ar Bean what do you think please? – April 30th.

I think it is an Argophyllum (alternate leaves, white underneath, toothed margin), but I have never worked with such young plants, so could not venture an opinion on the species. – April 30th.

Tony Bean.
Thank you very much for your thoughts, out of your extensively informed background.

Identification just to genus is great news for me for today.
More determination some day to species identity will keep well! :)
Since this observation 8 months ago, on a few occasions I worked to identify this sapling by RFK ed. 8 selecting matching features thus spp.,
then doing intense leaf scans searches.

Until today when I got a blessed selection of this small sapling's features through the RFK ed. 8 seedlings characters (with care, seedling ≠ saplings),
to narrow down the results enough to notice some Argophyllum spp. leaf scans venation details matching closely enough to these saplings,
for my confidence to identify this genus. A small 'Eureka' moment today.

Hence then this arvo I uploaded these 5 photographs,
and am more happy now you have shared your informed thoughts carefully corroborating this genus Argophyllum.

Very difficult saplings and seedlings identification to whatever possible taxonomic resolution, even if only family or genus,
makes up part of what I work on.

Best,
Jason. – April 30th

Example identifications reasons templates texts

Reason:
Not sufficient evidence in visual information nor any diagnostic features notes,
to identify this more than genus
ie. not sufficient to identify to species as:

  • not suitable for Computer Vision species machine learning purposes,
  • not suitable for future proof identification if morphology or phylogeny taxonomy work further splits [genus or higher rank taxon] species into segregate species,
  • not suitable for iNat users learning multiple [genus or higher rank taxon] species to learn the above opined species identification from.

I set this observation to Research Grade for this genus [genus or higher rank taxon].

Reason :
IMHO this does not identify to Schoenus maschalinus Roem. & Schult. .

These two photographs look more like either Schoenus apogon or Schoenus tesquorum.

Please check the botanical key(s) diagnostic features and reassess this identification, eg. The Flora of Vic. online Vicflora here.

Reason:

These two photographs show the botanical diagnostic features of this species .

Reason:

This single photograph shows the well known to me in field botanical surveys in this region since 1988–,
field spotting foliage features of this species .
