Karhuja vilisemällä

Yksi riistakamerapaikka osoittautui aarreaitaksi: kameraan tallentui muutaman päivän aikana vähintään 2-3 eri karhua, mäyrä, ilves ja useita eri hirviä, mukaan luettuna emä ja pieni vasa. Siirsin paikalle kaksi kameraa lisää, jotta saisin (toivottavasti) lisää kuvia eri kuvakulmista. Yhdellä videolla näkyy kaksi karhua syömässä ruohoa samaan aikaan, mutta toinen karhuista näkyy vain osittain (en saanut hyvää kuvakaappausta, jossa kaksi karhua näkyisi selvästi).

Pelkäsin liikkumi...

My walk in Jockey Hallow

Today I walked in Jockey Hallow located in Morristown National Park. I observed many different types of flowering plants as I walked with my family and my dog along the various hiking paths. Most of the flora in my area are, especially in the national park, giant angiosperms which are primarily oak trees. It was a bright warm day which made observing the flowering/blooming plants very pleasant. I also observed what I believe is Siebold's Viburnum, a white flowering plant that is an invas...

May Pollinator Spotlight: Cuckoo Bees

In the natural world, the struggle for survival is a difficult, often harsh constant. In the persistent evolutionary arms race of eat or be eaten and competition over resources, species have adapted ingenious survival strategies to thrive in this bustling ecosphere. Bees are an excellent example of highly developed adaptations. Eusocial bees, like the honey bees we’re all most familiar with, are capable of exceptionally efficient, industrious harmony. They build their own homes, care for...

May 31, 2024 Point Pelee National Park Day 2

Morning:

Northwest Beach: Eastern Giant Swallowtail and Summer Azure. Barn Swallows and American White Pelicans high overhead.

Then off to the Visitor Centre where we followed the Shuster Trail to the eastern shore. High water levels prevented us from walking along the shore. Then the Woodland Nature Trail behind the Visitor Centre where we saw more “hoary puccoon” and eastern prickly pear cactus.

Afternoon:

We parked in the parking lot at the Marsh Board...

Walk in my neighborhood

I went on a long walk in the woods near my house, as I often do, but making an effort to pay attention to the plants I passed made me realize how much biodiversity there is around me. That is not to say that I live in the most biodiverse place in the country, I certainly do not believe that, I just realized that not all green leafy plants are the same. I spent most of my walk looking for a plant that would fall into the seedless vascular plant family, keeping an eye out for ferns in part...

Hello everyone,

Key to the Genera of Myrmicinae in NB

We likely have 9 genera - Aphaenogaster, Crematogaster, Harpagoxenus, Leptothorax, Myrmecina, Myrmica, Stenamma, Temnothorax, Tetramorium, in the sub family Myrmicinae in NB.
This key covers all of the genera in NA but with a bit of work can be used to separate our 9 genera. Of course, one has to work out how to separate the Myrmicinae from the other 3 subfamilies in NB - Ponerinae, Dolichoderinae, Formicinae!

reminder and a call for help with flower identifications

I noticed that it is a good time for a reminder and a call for help with flower identifications. I'm happy to see many new members of the project and a lot of records. It's field season, so probably I have to come back to this topic at the end of the summer when it is time for more identifications again.

So, the main aim of the project is to record the flowering plant taxon the pollinator was visiting. For difficult plants it can be an ID at family level, but hopefully a lot of p...

May 2024: News species recorded

The estuary dished up some delightful sightings during this month of May:

Birds

Some special sightings recorded. The Eurasian Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) - a black and white version of our familiar African Black Oystercatcher - has returned to Stanley Island, possibly the same individual that made an appearance for a while last year (2023)

The Eurasian Curlew (Numenius arquata) was seen again on the estuary this month and, being this late, may well ...
