The Bay Checkerspot, Euphydryas editha bayensis, is a butterfly endemic to the San Francisco Bay region of the U.S. state of California. It is a federally threatened species, as a subspecies of Euphydryas editha.

On San Bruno Mountain 4

Larvae feed on California Plantain (Plantago erecta) for oviposition and small larvae. Owl's Clover (Castilleja densiflorus) as a secondary host after the plantain dries. Historically only a small colony of this butterfly has been known from the San Bruno Mountains, but in recent years, the Bay Checkersot Butterfly has not been seen on the mountains. it may have been extirpated as a result of two major grass fires in the mid-1980's.
