The crevalle jack, Caranx hippos (also known as the common jack, black-tailed trevally, couvalli jack, black cavalli and yellow cavalli) is a common species of large marine fish classified within the jack family, Carangidae. Caranx hippos (Linnaeus, 1766)

Caranx hippos also occurs at SãoTomé . It is characterized by a yellow anal fin, shorter dorsal and anal fin lobes and fewer anal fin rays (16 or 17 versus 17-19, usually 18) than the undescribed CaranxZBK species. It was observed by PW in SãoTomé City fish market. The records mentioned in Afonso et al. (1999) could belong to either CaranxZBK species.

Diagnostic description 10

Scutes 25 to 42; no scales on chest, except a small mid-ventral patch in front of pelvic fins; upper profile of head steep; maxilla ending approximately below posterior edge of eye; front of soft dorsal and anal fins elevated; olivaceous to bluish green dorsally, silvery to brassy on the sides; prominent black spot posteriorly on gill cover at level of eye, another at upper axil of pectoral fins, and often a third on lower pectoral rays; caudal yellowish (Ref. 13442).
