Butler's Garter Snake

Thamnophis butleri

Summary 2

Butler’s garter snake (Thamnophis butleri) is a species of garter snake endemic to North America. To determine this rare resident from the common garter snake, the scale rows on which the side stripe occurs must be determined. In Butler's garter snakes, the stripe is found on the third scale row from the belly, and bleeds onto the second and fourth rows. In contrast, common garter snakes have the lateral stripe wholly on rows 2 and 3.
