American Halfchaff Sedge

Lipocarpha maculata

Range description 2

Lipocarpha maculata is an endemic species of the coastal plain of the southeastern USA. It has been reported to occur in the states of Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Illinois, New Jersey, Alabama, District of Columbia, Florida, Pennsylvania and South Carolina but the taxon is not a native in all its range e.g., Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey (Smith 1867, Henry and Scott 1981, Sorrie and Weakley 1999). Lipocarpha maculata appears to have been falsely reported in Central and South America and in the West Indies (Kew Monocot Checklist), as a result of misidentification with L. mexicana and L. salzmanniana, both of which were formerly accepted as synonyms for the taxon (Stevens et al. 2001). It occurs from sea level up to 200 m asl.
