rock louse

Ligia pallasii

Description 3

Uncommon in the Bay Area. Garthwaite and Lawson describe it as a creature restricted to the outer coast. Scott has heard anecdotal reports that it prefers sea caves. It can be distinguished from the more common L. occidentalis by the degree to which the eyes are separated: on L. pallasii the eyes should be separated by a distance equal to about two eye widths, while in L. occidentalis the eyes wrap around more and are separated by one eye width.
