Asian Tiger Mosquito

Aedes albopictus

Summary 3

The Tiger mosquito or forest mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Stegomyia albopicta) is characterized by its black and white striped legs and body. The single central white stripe down the center of the thorax on a black background distinguishes it from the similar Yellow-fever mosquito Aedes aegypti. It is native to the tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia; however, over the past several decades this pest species has invaded many countries throughout the world through the transport of goods and increasing international travel. Although perhaps not as nasty of a vector as the Yellow-fever mosquito, this species is capable of transmitting several viral pathogens including Dengue and Chinkungunya virus.
