Wyeomyia mitchelli breeds in bromeliads and other phytotelmata. It displays a two toned abdomen with dark top and a contrasting white undersides. While biting the hind-legs are often held in a characteristic arching forward manner. This species is normally found breeding in bromeliads in the Greater Antilles, the Atlantic slope of Mexico and southern Florida. More recently it has been found in Hawaii and now French Polynesia.
