Densely tufted perennial. Leaves mostly basal; blades linear, filiformes, 30-70 cm long. Inflorescence terminal, paniculate, 6-15 cm long, purplish, solitary or close by 2, peduncles reduced; spikelets with long hairs in the marge or sparsely pubescent, sessiles, hermaphrodites, narrowly oblong, 7-9,5 mm long; upper flowers fertiles, 3-nerved, shorter than the glumes, large, bilobed to the sommet, ciliate, 10-15 mm long.
