squirreltail

Elymus elymoides

Description 2

Medium-sized dense bunchgrass 40 to 60 cm tall with a striking inflorescence. Awns are 2 to 12 cm long, straight in flower, twisting at the base when ripe, creating an easily-recognizable seedhead. Leaves are short and narrow (, usually folded or rolled. Seeds break away readily when ripe, but some may be retained on old inflorescences. Uncommon in the preserve; only seen in the northern areas around Brown's Mountain and north of Cholla Mountain.
