Common Snapping Turtle

Chelydra serpentina

Common Snapping Turtle 2

Common Snapping Turtles can be found in all of our ponds as well as the nearby bayou, but they are hard to spot because they rarely come out of the water. These large, prehistoric-looking turtles are dark with huge heads, slightly serrated shells, and long, muscular tails. Snapping turtles are impressive predators, eating almost anything small enough to fit in their mouths. While they are mostly active at night, you can sometimes see them basking on logs or resting just beneath the water's surface during the day.
