Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toad

Gastrophryne carolinensis

Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toad 2

Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toads are extremely common at the Arboretum, but nearly impossible to see. These tiny toad-like amphibians usually hide under leaf litter or in small burrows. Despite their small size and burrowing habit, they are easy to hear due to their incredibly loud calls. They call most frequently after a heavy rain, especially when the forest floor is partly flooded. The call sounds like a buzzing bleat: http://srelherp.uga.edu/anurans/gascar.htm
