Southern Leopard Frog

Lithobates sphenocephalus

Southern Leopard Frog 2

The Southern Leopard Frog is a common species at the Arboretum. It is found both near water and quite far inland - if you see a good-sized frog hopping through the forest, it's probably a Southern Leopard Frog. These pretty frogs are usually heavily patterned with dark "leopard" spots and two pale lines running along the back from behind the eyes. The background color ranges from green to brown, and they usually have a dark mask around the eyes. This species makes a call that sounds like someone nervously chuckling, or like someone rapidly rubbing a balloon: http://arkansasfrogsandtoads.org/southern-leopard-frog/
