DeKay's Brownsnake

Storeria dekayi

DeKay's Brownsnake 2

DeKay's Brownsnake is another common but rarely-seen species of small snake. These light brown snakes have a pattern of dark brown "checkers" on their bodies, a light stripe along the center of the back, and a complex pattern of dark and light markings on their heads. Shy and retiring, these snakes spend most of their time under cover or burrowing. They are often found in gardens and compost piles where they can find their prey of slugs, worms, and small insects.
