Green Shore Crab

Carcinus maenas

Summary 3

Carcinus maenas, the green shore crab or european green crab, is a littoral crab, and a widespread invasive species. It is native to the north east Atlantic ocean and the Baltic sea, but it can now be found in Australia, South Africa, South America, and the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of North America. Despite their name, the green crab can actually be many colours, from brown to red or even grey. The green crab can be found in the intertidal and shallow subtidal, under rocks and algae, and in tidepools, marshes, and seagrass beds.
