Cambarus friaufi

Distribution 2

Global Range: (1000-5000 square km (about 400-2000 square miles)) Restricted to small streams of the Highland Rim in DeKalb and Smith counties, and Cannon, Humphreys, and Stewart counties, Tennessee. In Kentucky, it is rare, occurring in the upper reaches of the Barren River drainage in Allen Co. and the Little River, a tributary of the Cumberland River in Trigg Co. (Taylor and Schuster, 2004).

Habitat and ecology 3

Habitat and Ecology

The type locality of this specieswas a small roadside stream. It was 1.2 - 1.8 m wide and 0.1 - 0.3 m in depth. The substrate was rocky, with clear fast flowing water. There was an accumulation of rubbish and debris on the rocks and in the eddies in the faster flowing areas (Hobbs 1953).

Justification
Cambarus friaufi has been assessed as Least Concern (LC). This species is confined to northern Tennessee and parts of southern Kentucky, equating to an EOO in excess of 17,000 km2, and is located in rural areas with no immediate threats and no evidence of decline. It is found in a road-side stream, which contains a build up of rubbish and debris, suggesting this species is tolerant to pollution and habitat disturbance. It is therefore unlikely this species is significantly affected by the threat process in the CumberlandBasin.

Nature serve conservation status 5

Rounded Global Status Rank: G4 - Apparently Secure

Reasons: This species is confined to northern Tennessee and parts of southern Kentucky (range extent <5000 sq. km) located in rural areas with no immediate threats and no evidence of decline.
