Neogastroclonium subarticulatum are found from Nootka Sound, Vancouver Island, British Columbia (CAN) to Baja California (MEX).
Habitat
N. subarticulatum, Sea Belly, are found in the low intertidal zone and subtidally, in relatively sheltered sites, on rocks in shallow subtidal and especially low to mid-intertidal zone. Appearance can be seasonal, regrowing from persistent basal portions after winter erosion.

G. subarticulatum is currently regarded as a synonym of Neogastroclonium subarticulatum, with the latter being used predominately (Algaebase, 2018). Thalli is short and erect, growing from 6 – 20 cm (up to 26 cm) tall. Color is dark red to greenish-brown depending on location and time of year (Stanford, 2018). Often found mixed in with other fleshy reds, but the key is it's “kong” or barrel-shaped projections on long cylindrical axes. The branching is irregular to dichotomous with apices of branches hollow with transverse septa.
