Chondracanthus canaliculatus can be found from southern Oregon (USA) to Isla Magdalena in Baja California (MEX).

Habitat
C. canaliculatus is found in the low to mid intertidal zone.

Morphology and Identification
Chondracanthus canaliculatu is usually ~ 4 to 20 cm tall (up to 25 cm) and greenish-brown to dark purple in color with the lower portions being green in color while upper portions vary from purple to black. It has cylindrical axes, sometimes with flat tips and sharply pointed apices which are dark red to light green in color. Its lower branches are 2-3 mm wide and tend to be slight to not branched at all. In the branching sections, the branching pattern is primarily dichotomous with distichous terminal portions. Thalli feels rubbery.
