Habitat and Range 4

Commonly found growing on rocks in the lower middle intertidal zone from Humboldt County, California to Isle Cedros, Baja California, Mexico.

Morphology and Identification 4

The thalli of Mazzaella leptorhynchos is dark brown to blackish to green in color, wholly/soft, and can grow up to 40 cm in height (usually 10 to 15 cm). Irregularly branched. Highly variable morphology, typically with flattened to slightly cylindrical axes that are covered with soft, rod-like papillae.

Northern Californian specimens are usually very uniform in size and branching pattern. Southern Californian specimens are larger and more cylindrical, with fewer laterals and with dense, long papillae and branchlets.
