Great Plains Skink (Plestiodon obsoletus)

Description

This large (approx 9") skink lives in and around a cinderblock raised bed garden, and frequently tunnels through the holes in the blocks to get around. It's also very bold-- walked right up to me, descended the wall, over my feet to the opposite side. I presume female because of size, and there are usually juveniles running around in spring.

Description

~12 mm body. The black metasoma with two white dashes on the upper thorax was unusually furry. Busy restructuring a nest from a previous generation hole made in a carved pine bear. Several females were observed taking their first flight of the year today and immediately making nests in the same holes they emerged from. This female gathered orange pollen from an unknown source to start her nest.
