Called animal control because I didn't want to kill it, they said that it is a naturalized species and to throw it in a field.

If your location is Claremont, CA, then clearly this is an escaped/released pet, and certainly is neither a native nor naturalized species. Clearly the uneducated animal control person was not somebody you should be taking advice from.
