I feel this is more likely to be a russula

I agree with myxonz, but it's very hard to tell from only one shot. Mushrooms are hard to ID from photo alone, but it's usually good to take multiple photos of different features: cap, gills, stem, base, and any staining reaction to physical or chemical tests. In this case, if we could see the stem and base we could almost certainly distinguish btwn Amanita and Russula. Sadly, getting to the species with Russula would probably require a microscope.

Yeah, nowadays I do try to get more shots from different angles, when feasible. (In my own defense, the mosquitoes were something else for that entire trip.) Will tentatively go with Russula, at any rate. Thanks!

Slugs and snails like russula's which probably accounts for the holes in the cap were Amanita are not so popular and are rarely eaten.
