Description
A large flat soft shell turtle with tiny spots on the shell, yellow eyes, and a yellow margin around the carapace. Also has black bordered yellow stripes that travel along the neck and do not connect unlike the Gulf spiny softshell.
Neither of those shots are great for ID. The head on shot doesn't show the nostril projections of spiny softshell very well but I think I can make it out in there. The other shot shows some bumpiness at the front of the carapace but again this region is under a little disturbed water so it is hard to see it clearly.
Thank you Toby. I keep looking at different resources, am a beginner at this field. It is very confusing because different sources present different information, classifications, and pictures. I found the distinction about the lines on the neck differentiating the Gulf from the Eastern Spiny Softshell at http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu and that was clear enough in the pictures I have.
The data quality assessment is a summary of an observation's accuracy. All
observations start as "casual" grade, and achieve
"research" grade when
the iNat community agrees with the observer's ID, where an "agreeing"
identification is one that matches exactly or is of a child taxon of the
observer's ID. For example, if Scott says it's a mammal and Ken-ichi
says it's Homo sapiens, then Ken-ichi agrees with Scott.
