Any guidance on species, bob-dodge? Seems like you need a microscope for that...
SO.... I correct myself and the ID. Quick look at an individual plant will tell you. A single rootlet is Lemna minor, the Common Duckweed. Multiple rootlets indicates Spiroldea polyrhiza, Greater Duckweed. Had I done my homework earlier this would not have happened, but, Hey, I'm getting old!
Thanks! So, the "rootlet" is the strand(s) coming out of the backs of the leaves? I'm not really clear on whether the little butterfly shapes are complete leaf structures, or combinations of multiple leaves. This seems more likely, from the pictures I've been looking through.
Family: Araceae; SubFamily: Lemnoideae; Genus: Lemna, Spirodela, Wolffia,
Wolffiella
Each leaf is its own plant structure complete with flowers encapsulated within the very thin leaf.
