We found this weird beetle outside our front porch.

This is probably Polyphylla decimlineata, the most widespread and common California species. There are 14 species of Polyphylla in California and I don't have a guide that covers them all, so I can't say what others might have a similar appearrance. i think P. nigra and P. crinita have stripes too, but I'm not sure.

Agree with P. decemlineata, but there are a few other striped ones as well that you can see here.
