Description

Are there other octopus species found in tide pools? I couldn't get a better shot. It was getting dark and we had to use a flashlight to get even this. Someone put a hermit crab or snail nearby and it reached out its tentacle to grab it. About 2-3 inches across wrapped up like this.

Well, there's Octopus rubescens, which is more northern, I think, and lacks eye spots, and Octopus bimaculatus, which is supposedly bigger and more common offshore, though the differences between the two "two-spot" octopi seem pretty subtle to me. Interesting discussion at http://www.tonmo.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-6173.html
