The old world Eurasian Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) and the new world Common Gallinule (Gallinula galeata) used to be lumped under one species Common Gallinule (Gallinula chloropus). They were split taxonomically a number of years ago. I would suggest that your observation is of the species that occurs in the western hemisphere, Common Gallinule (Gallinula galeata). The Eurasian bird (Gallinula chloropus), as currently accepted taxonomically, does not occur in North America. Many bird books still show the old nomenclature, but the new books published in the past few years are correct. I know this is all a bit confusing as taxonomy is always changing as DNA and other protocols improve.
