Came across this guy today (3m from me) whilst out birding. About 1-1.2m long and rather thick.
Yes I noticed that. Also had a look at the latest data on the reptile atlas Project from the Animal Demography Unit (ADU) in Cape Town; there does seem to have been considerable range extension since all the last batch of distribution maps were published. The ADU Virtual Museum is here http://vmus.adu.org.za/ - just search in SARCA the reptile project and maps with the latest data.

This same species was observed nearby in Orkney. Both out of range slightly of the published distribution map.
