I think it's a sphinx moth... do you have other pictures? Or information about what it was dining on? Bill Oehlke's site is usually helpful; although these catepillars can have a confusing variety of patterns and colors.

I put up a couple more photos, though they're not much better. Looks like it has a dark red head, though. I couldn't get very close as it was on the other side of a fence, so didn't see what it was eating/doing, but it was just in the short vegetation of a cow pasture.

I don't know what else it could be (doesn't mean it isn't something else), but I have no idea which sphinx it is...as someone else mentioned, the colors and patterns are confusing.
