Red-headed Woodpeckers have heads that are all red, and are only rarely found on this side of the country. This is an adult male Hairy Woodpecker-- the red spot shows it's a male, and the white spots, white back, and all-white outer tail feather show it's a Hairy Woodpecker (Downy Woodpeckers look very similar but have a black-spotted outer tail feather instead of an all-white one). This is a nice, close photo (even though the beak's cut off), makes it easy to ID.

Great sighting! I was going to agree with Hairy (as opposed to Downy) based on the larger beak size, but I didn't know about sea-kangaroo's tail-feather trick - learn something new every day!
