I saw a black bodied caterpillar that had red nodules up and down its back. Each nodule had a tuft of hair coming out of it. My mom touched the hairs and a milky white liquid appered on the hairs. My mom later complained her finger was numb after she touched it.

I'd generally recommend against touching strange caterpillars, especially fluffy ones--some of them have a really nasty sting.

I'd certainly agree with Orgyia but not sure on the species - it looks like a lot of the images on the web for Orgyia vetusta (Western Tussock Moth).
