AOU makes the same split. Apparently the birds in northern South America, Central America and Mexico are all now Gartered Trogon (T. caligatus) while the Violaceous Trogon (T. violaceus) is only in the deep rainforests of South America. Great catch, Loarie. Wikipedia even has the current info:
