Pituophis catenifer sayi is the full scientific name, but gopher snakes are a close relative.

Got it, weird that they call Pituophis catenifer gopher snakes out here in CA, I know the eastern Pituophis they call pine snakes

Gopher, bullsnakes, and pine snakes on the east coast are all Pituophis catenifer, but I guess there are enough differences to warrant a sub species designation. I have 2 captive bred Sonoran Desert Gopher Snakes they don't look much different than the gopher snakes i use to catch in Vacaville, CA when I was younger.

Pituophis catenifer catenifer is the Pacific Gopher Snake, Pituophis catenifer annectens is the San Diego Gopher Snake, Pituophis catenifer affinis is the Sonoran Gopher Snake, Pituophis catenifer deserticola is the Great Basin Gopher Snake and the Bull Snake is Pituophis catenifer sayi, Those are the major western Gopher Snake species. I would guess the differences are minor because i have seen most of them in my travels across the western states.
