txsporty67,
Was this great plains rat a road kill? Or was it attacked by a predator?

It was road kill, I just moved to this area and don't know some of the species that live around here. I am using a Peterson's field guide to ID stuff I see, but I think the book is wrong about some of it's descriptions. The great plains rat snake, prairie king snake and the phase of the milk snake that lives around here aren't even listed.

The great plains ratsnake is considered by some as a subspecies of the corn snake (Elaphe guttata emoryi), now newly named Pantherophis emoryi.
Unfortunately Field guides can be out of date by the time they are published, especially if they are not reptile specific, ie. the ones that have numerous animal species in them.
Just use it as a ' guide' but not as a bible ;)
Good luck in the future.
