Are you sure? This is not a tree.. it's on the ground.. I thought it was a "bunchberry"

The image posted with this observation sure looks like the branch of a tree and nothing like our little bunchberry, the groundcover species C. unalaschkensis. Bunchberry always has 4 white bracts and a whorl of 6 leaves subtending the inflorescence. Try a google image search for Cornus unalaschkensis and see what you find. Then compare to images of Cornus nuttallii.
