I'm wondering if this might be a Pied-billed Grebe? I actually just saw an American Coot young and a Pied-billed Grebe young yesterday. Your bird looks like it has some black striping on the face, but maybe I'm not seeing it properly. The coot that I saw was brownish above and had a white throat and front half of the neck - like your bird, only there was no black striping on the face. Pied-billed Grebe young do have black striping on the face. If it was the feet that led you to id this as an American Coot, Pied-billed Grebes have somewhat similar feet. Note that before yesterday, I had almost no experience with the young of either species, so feel free to dismiss my suggestion.
